J&P won a comendation award for our work on the Dream project, and a Special Communications Award for innovation for our work on the Key2Concrete project.
Congratulations should go to everyone in the company who has worked to make these projects a success, especially Cliff Billington who worked tirelessly on both and James Smith who sucessfully modelled The Dream sculpture in 3D to ensure the correct and safe connection between each of the sculpture's many sections.

J&P is pleased to announce a new online and printed brochure for our Isopro range of products.
Isopro is a thermally insulating, structural connection element between concrete construction components. Its excellent thermal insulation properties provide a reliable solution to the problems of building physics at the interface between external and internal construction elements. Isopro consists of an insulation body together with reinforcement, which ensures effective transfer of forces.
A new, web-orientated knowledgebase has been launched for the Construction Industry. Entitled Key2concrete, it is targeted at specifiers and users of concrete, particularly precast concrete, and aims to fill a void in the range of information available.
Precast concrete frequently uses proprietary systems for connections etc, and manufacturers usually provide information on their own products. At the other end of the spectrum are reference books that cover the design of structures using precast elements. In the middle though is the day-to-day practical knowledge that usually only comes with experience, and it is this area that the site is aimed at.
The author is Cliff Billington, Technical Director of J&P Building Systems, although prior to this, Cliff has spent nearly 40 years in the precast industry. During this time he has been involved in most aspects of precast, such as beam & block flooring, hollow-core flooring, double-tees, frames, and architectural cladding. He most recently spent thirteen years as Chief Designer at Trent Concrete, where he was involved in many award winning projects. In addition Cliff represents the UK on several European Committees dealing with precast concrete, and has been instrumental in drafting several UK Standards.
The site consists of a series of data sheets covering a broad range of subjects such as Connections & Fittings, Environment, Joints & Interfaces, Lifting & Transportation and others. They may be viewed on screen as well as being downloaded as a .pdf file suitable for saving or printing. Subjects and keywords can be searched from the index. In addition there is a facility to ‘Ask Cliff’ and put forward specific queries in confidence.
Cliff says “There is a vast amount of knowledge locked away in people’s brains that has no obvious way of being passed on to others. This is a way of getting some of this relatively low grade information out into the industry at large. It is not intended as a source of design information, but rather as a reference giving guidance on best practice. By referring to the site, it is hoped that greater efficiency will result at the design stage to everyone’s advantage. Although much of the content relates to commercially available products, we have been at great pains not to favour any manufacturers. Where a product is shown, then wherever possible an alternative is also shown”
The site has been developed in association with the British Precast Concrete Federation, and is also supported by several leading companies in the industry. BPCF CEO, Martin Clarke says “We are delighted to support this generic project, one which captures a mass of useful advice and detail for the greater good of the whole UK structural and architectural precast industry and its supply chain. Key2concrete is a world-class, accessible and clearly written resource that has moved this dynamic sector forward in one major stride. New horizons beckon for this industry and we face the future with relish.”
It is intended that as the site develops, additional features will be added such as access to downloadable CAD files, and access to more ‘in depth’ subjects such as sustainability. By registering with the site, users will be kept updated with subsequent additions and developments.
Access is at www.key2concrete.com
